Deeply appreciate the honour of being named as a newsletter meeting a need, lying somewhere between the internet book slop and growing black home of lit criticism in mags. (sigh)

I am most into your After Sappho comments tho - I acquired a copy of that book eons ago (3 years?) and honestly just left it on the shelf bc i had read a few pieces that said it was shit, and i thought well if I ever want to read it I want distance from these opinions I have read.... but since I guess I haven't seen anyone talk about it and have forgotten of its existence. THIS is making me think I should pick it up soon.

also snorted at Bugonia comment. In the moment I enjoyed the unpredictable chaos of that film, but retrospectively I just keep picking holes in it

I'd be curious what you think — I love a polyphonic novel with interesting prose. Huge scope, imaginative, etc...gets a bit repetitive (I would've edited it differently) but overall I'd say worth a read!

This def got me thinking!!! About the “industry”… about “marketing” vs. “influence” vs. criticism and how we find and engage with books

love Your substack! & thanks for great recommendations here, I'm subscribing left and right (Kristen's quote above is so solid) --also really adored Sentimental Value and will be adding the other films you've mentioned to my to-watch list !
